Quartz Upstands ~ Perfect Finishing Touch

Reading time: 5 mins

With so many questions regarding upstands, it is prudent to have everything explained about quartz upstands in one place. The following detail will provide enough to help decisions regarding the most popular finishing touch to any quartz worktop.

Quartz upstands are low level splashbacks

Upstands are a form of low level splashbacks that are a necessity in kitchens for protection against spills and splashes.

What are splashbacks?

Quartz splashbacks are one of the most durable of all splashbacks, and can be defined as protection that clads the wall behind the work surface upto the base of wall units, or less commonly, to the ceiling. Available in any height that fits in with design and practical use, the only things to consider are cut outs for electrial outlets, thickness of the quartz surface chosen and of course the impact on costs of the quartz worktop budget.

What are the benefits of having quartz upstands?

Not only are upstands aesthetically pleasing, they are also a practical and perfect finishing touch for quartz worktops. Worktop upstands are a neat and tidy design alternative to full splashbacks and can be installed around the whole kitchen worktop at low cost. Easy to clean and maintain, extremely durable and resistant, upstands protect your wall from splashes and contain and protect your base units from spillages. With uneven walls found in homes old and new, upstands hide the gap between the worktop and the wall leaving a nice straight edge along the back of the worktop.

Combining quartz upstands with other finishes

Quartz upstands combine with other finishes perfectly such as hob splashbacks and tiled walls. An upstand can continue underneath a glass splashback or stop at each side as it does for quartz hob splashbacks. Upstands provide a aesthetically pleasing base for tiled walls: For a wall that is already tiled, the upstand can be cut to any size that fills the gap between the work surface and the bottom tile. Removing a row of tiles or adjusting to height differences from a previously thicker worktop are all options to consider to get the benefits that an upstand provides.

Worktop surface thickness impacts cost of quartz upstands

Considerations to the thickness of a worktop can have an impact on the cost of quartz upstands. As quartz worktop materials come in 12mm, 20mm and 30mm thickness's, it is evident that the upstands will be the same thickness. Quartz Upstands can be slimmed down to a minimum of 10mm, so they do not look so heavy, especially if a 30mm worktop was chosen, however, this will incur additional cost.

Deciding the height of quartz upstands

height of quartz upstands are standardized at 100mm, however, they can be any height that fits with your design. In most cases, the height of quartz upstands is dominated by the remnant material after cutting the worktops. Therefore, to minimise the amount of material and to keep the cost of quartz worktops within a budget, the remnant quartz material allows for approximately 75mm upstands.

Quartz upstand lengths and joins

length of quartz upstands depend on how the worktops are cut, with a maxiumum upstand length of around 3 metres. Where worktop runs are longer than 3 metres, joins will be required, and as many joins as necessary can be made. Joins should be inconspicuous and where possible made in corners and in locations of adjoining undersills and splashbacks.

Fixing quartz upstands to wall

Quartz Upstands should be fixed to the wall behind the worktop with a water-resistant silicone, completely hiding the gap between the workop and the wall. Any resulting gap between the upstand and the wall is not the worktop fitters responsibility and can be filled with decorators caulk or similar. The join between upstands and worktop, if installed correctly, should be barely visible, not requiring fixatives.

Quartz upstand care and maintenance

Easy to clean and maintain, quartz upstands inherit the same resistances as the worktop. Using warm soapy water and a soft cloth is all that is needed to wipe away splashes from pots, pans and utensils. Spills that are contained by the upstands can simply be wiped away with an absorbent cloth or with paper towels.
